It seems that Moscow is very far from the European middle ages a mysterious, isn’t it? But actually, the Gothic period in the development of medieval art of the XII-XVI centuries did not escape the influence of the Russian capital. Gothic architecture

The Gothic style mainly manifested in the architecture of temples, cathedrals, churches, monasteries. Developed on the basis of the Romanesque, or rather Burgundian architecture. Unlike the Romanesque style with its round arches, massive walls and small Windows, typical of Gothic arches with a pointed top, a narrow and high towers and columns, the richly decorated facade with carved details (winery, tympanum, archivolt) and multicolor stained glass Lancet Windows. All the style elements that emphasize the vertical.

In Gothic architecture distinguish 3 stages of development: early, Mature (high Gothic), and late.

The Church of the monastery of Saint-Denis, designed by Abbot Suger, is considered the first Gothic architectural structure. In its construction were removed many pillars and interior walls, and the Church has become more graceful look compared to Romanesque “fortress of God”. Cyclopean structures of antiquity

Cyclops or Ciclope (Κύκλωπες), in Greek mythology born of Uranus and Gaia, the titans, the personification of storm clouds with lightning, symbolic way, which is a single large glowing eye of giants (Cyclops, in Greek language, means Krugloye). On the relation of the Cyclops to the atmospheric phenomenon of a thunderstorm indicate their names: Bronte (βροντή thunder), Strop (στεροπή — lightning) and Arges (άργής — flash). The hostile attitude to the father, they were cast down to the abyss of the earth (Hesiod, Theogony, 139-146). At the heart of this myth lies the idea of the disappearance in the land of lightning, cutting through clouds and air. Through their mediation Cronus defeated Uranus, and then they helped Zeus defeat Cronus; Zeus was using made the lightning and thunder arrows. In addition, the Cyclops, being skilful Smiths, forged the Poseidon — a Trident and a manger for his horses Hades helmet of invisibility, Artemis silver bow and arrow (Apollodorus, I, 2, 1).
